Public Art Initiatives: Perspectives from Two Cities--Austin and Saltillo

  • ACC Highland Campus United States (map)

ACC Community and Public Affairs, The Art Galleries at Austin Community College, the Latin American Cultural Center, the Arts & Digital Media Division and the Austin Saltillo Sister Cities Association are hosting this hybrid event in which three muralists will talk about their recent public artwork.

Julio Ávalos, also known as Chous, and Ana Flores Lavin are graphic artists and designers who specialize in large-scale murals and public art as well as traditional and digital illustration. Based in Saltillo, Coahuila, they have worked on major projects and explored their passion for the arts in Mexico and around the world. A main focus of their work is to engage in the recovery of public spaces and crime prevention through art and cultural management. In addition to their urban art projects, they have worked on branding for companies and produced creative output for various cultural festivals.

J Muzacz is a public artist, community organizer, and educator with nearly two decades of experience creating landmark artworks. His innovative mosaics blend contemporary technology with the ancient process of mosaic-making. His artistic career has evolved naturally from traveling the world, collaboration with diverse communities, and a social practice involving education, having studied Sociology and been a teacher for over a decade. In 2018, Muzacz co-founded The Mosaic Workshop, where people of all ages and abilities can learn the art of mosaic making through hands-on workshops and ambitious community-led mosaic murals.
